American Orders
Lt. Col.
The NVA occupy Hill 881 just north of the village of Lang Vei. The NVA’s occupation of Hill 881 seriously threatens the security of Firebase Khe Sanh and the surrounding countryside. General Westmoreland thinks we need to take the hill by force. It is your task to engage and eliminate all NVA forces on Hill 881. Your companies will be air lifted in to LZ that have been cleared by elements from our Special Forces babes near Lang. Artillery and aircraft have hit Hill 881 in advance of your attack and most of the vegetation has been cleared so that your troops may more freely advance on suspected enemy positions. All aircraft in the area have support of this mission as priority one. God Speed and good luck.
General Lewis W. Walt,
Intelligence
At least a Battalion of NVA occupies Hill 881. Special Forces teams have discovered that much of the enemy infantry is dug in to hasty ground works and supported by machineguns in log bunkers. They NVA have limited Artillery support in the area so don’t count on it being a factor in this fight. What can be expected is that NVA will have a lot of boots on the ground, so make sure you hit the hard with Artillery and Air Support.
Remember you engineers can assault bunkers and can clear additional LZ if needed. It is imperative that you keep them clear so that reinforcements can come in.

NVA Orders
Major
Our forces have taken control of the several hills surrounding Firebase Khe Sanh in preparations for a major offensive. We are deploying elements of your Battalion on Hill 881 just north of the village of Lang Vei. It is your task to set up an FAO so that he can observe enemy movement in the valley and call in artillery strikes on their positions. Your men are to dig trenches and construct bunkers in order to repel any American attacks on the heights.
Our political wing has infiltrated the local populations and several guerrilla units are also at your disposal. You will be like a nest of fire ants in the Americans side.
General Võ Nguyên Giáp
Intelligence
For several days now Special Forces teams have been probing the hillside. We suspect that an attack on the heights will happen any day. It is doubtful that the Americans will make the long trek across open country to attack the hill. Most likely they will try to clear an LZ and land their forces by helicopter. It is imperative that you prevent them from taking the hill. The main body of your men must deploy to repel these attacks on the ground above the potential LZ’s. Your men can expect a heavy barrage from US Artillery and Air in advance of the assault so it is imperative that you have them dig in and stay put until it stops.

After Action Report
Game was given a time limit instead of a turn limit. We would play till 11pm. By this time we would be too tired, too drunk or both. There was 7 players and 1 GM.

The Americans quickly deployed from the LZ and moved into the jungle surrounding hill 881. Two companies moved north in an attempt to out flank the NVA and one company would move towards 881N to be a diversion, but also to guard the American left flank.

American scouts managed to draw out a portion of the NVA, who where dug in atop 881N. These NVA would call in artillery support in a feeble attempt to thwart the American attack. Once the NVA were draw out on top of the hill, the Americans began reigning in artillery and air support on their positions. This had little impact on the moral of the NVA, who managed to avoid any serious casualties. At one point two NVA regular units assaulted down the hill and killed an American HMG and the FAO.

The Americans continued to fire at targets on the hill, but their aircraft were driven off turn after turn by heavy AA fire. Finally US helicopters where able to eliminate two NVA bunkers. The American company in the center began their assault up the hill. To their HQ surprise and frustration he would start his assault alone as all other commands would fail their command, turn after turn.

Eventually the US air was able to drop successive turns of Napalm on NVA targets, suppressing and severally limiting their command ability. This would allow the Americans to forcefully make their way to the top.

The NVA did manage to shoot down a single F4, but by this time it was too late. The Americans had out flanked the NVA to the north and simply rolled up the hill. A last ditch Ambush by local VC had little effect of the tidal wave of US troops. The Americans assaulted the top of 881 N and raised the stars and stripes. The NVA would then try to regroup for a counter attack, but failed their command check after taking too many casualties, thus conceding the hill to the Yankees.
