Ambush of An Phu (Cold War Commander)

US Orders
Background
Your company is to escort a supply convoy, vital to the war effort, through the village of An Phu. An Phu has recently been a hot bed of VC. You will send ground force forward to secure the village prior to the convoys approach in order to assure safe passage. Once the convoy has passed through the village and on to the other side your men will be air lifted back to base. Remember civilians are non combatants, so don’t shoot them.

Intelligence
We have known for days now that the VC have infiltrated the village of An Phu. We do expect them to pop their heads out of the ground on this one. The NVA have been concentrating their units in the North, so light resistance from local VC is probably all you will encounter. Have your infantry move into the town ahead of the convoy to ensure no locals get out of hand. Just in case things get out of hand a Air Cav. Platoon is on stand by in case things get dicy.

Objective
+2 for each truck that exits opposite board edge.
+2 for holding the village at the end of game.
(-) 1 for each civilian casualty

Convoy
Convoy will not enter the table edge until the start of turn 3. The trucks must stay on the road, unless forced to fall back by fire. They will have 7 turns after that to make it off the opposite side. Convoy can only receive orders from the CO.

Air Cav
Your Air Cav Platoon will not be able to be requested until turn 4.

NVA Orders
Back Ground:
The village of An Phu is located along a vital route that the Americans use to supply their Fire Bases in the North. Recently the command has infiltrated the village and word has come down that the Americans are moving vitally needed ammunition and food through the area. Your company has been ordered to take hold of the village and ambush the Americans. Destroy as many of the westerners as you can and capture the ammo and food tucks in the process.

Intelligence
The Americans are expected to be advancing on village of An Phu in the early morning. Since the VC are fairly active in this area you can expect an infantry sweep of the village prior to the arrival of the main convoy of trucks. Expect the Americans to have armor, artillery and air support. So set your set your traps and deploy your ambushes.

Objectives
Objects for the NVA are to hold the village of An Phu and capture the American Supply Trucks.
+ 2 Holding the village of An Phu at the end of the game
+ 1 for each plane shot down
+ 1 for each American tank destroyed
+ 2 for each Supply Truck that is captured

Capturing a Supply Truck
If a unit assaults a supply truck and wins instead of defeating the supply truck he may capture it. It then becomes under the control of the NVA player.

Hidden Deployment

All you units start off hidden. During your initiative phase your command may deploy up to half their units within 10cm of a civilian unit. The HQ must deploy with the first half of the units from a formation. After you are finished deploying your troops, remove the civilian marker. This does not count as a dead civilian stand. The CO and his units deploy at one time replacing only one of the civilian units.

After Action Report

The game began with the Americans deploying two platoons south of the village of An Phu, which was located on a hill over looking rice paddies.

The first American platoon failed its command check and it’s advanced halted, as their HQ checked the maps to make sure they where in the right area.

While first platoon fumbled around second platoon got anxious for action and passed their command checks 3 times. With caution to the wind second platoon made it their goal to take the village of An Phu before first platoon. It seemed they were also hoping they would enter the village with such speed that the NVA would be caught by surprise.

This hasty move would be the down fall of first platoon for civilians over looking the fields from the village were actually enemy soldiers in disguise. A platoon and a half of NVA let loose and decimated around half of second platoon and the other half was left pinned down. Their survival depended on the fumbling first platoon and the companies FAO and FAC.

First platoon finally got moving and advanced on the hill. But because they had so much ground to cover they only where able to provide one round of shooting to assist the pinned down second platoon.

The FAC and FAO where able to call in their artillery and air assets and pounded the village of An Phu.

For the next several turns the NVA and US infantry would slug it out and Artillery and Air would leave most of the village in ruin.

By turn four, second platoon had been ambushed by VC on their left flank and had too many casualties to continue the fight. They where withdrawn from the battle. The NVA in the village where not fairing any better. This gave first platoon the opportunity to advance into the village a secure it ahead of the convoy, which had just arrived on the in the valley, but then as if coordinated in some master plan, NVA troops ambushed first platoon from behind. Second platoon was caught in the open on the hill and where subsequently dismantled, by amazing command rolls and some NVA artillery support.

The next turn though the NVA would once again find them selves on the receiving end of US air and artillery support as well as newly arrive attack helicopters. To make matter worse for the NVA, after being pounded by US air and artillery and platoon of Air Cav landed to replace the heavily damaged first platoon.

The US convoy would also arrive, but at this point the remaining VC along the road had little effect on its advance. They could only hope for a miracle. This came in the form of two rounds of the US CO rolling snake eyes. Americans all over the board began shooting at each other and the local population. As a result 2 civilians units would be killed. Earlier first platoon mistook some civilians who had been hit by US artillery as NVA and shot them also.
This turn of events left the Americans down 3 victory points and the NVA holding the village at 2 points. With time running out the Americans made an all out assaulting push on the hill. Feeling victory being snatched from their hands, the NVA decided to bomb the convoy of trucks instead of capturing it. As the Americans pushed up and over the hill, their armor was too much to the remaining VC to take. So the trucks not eliminated in the artillery strike where attacked with booby traps and destroyed.
